Kitchen Garden
This was what the space behind the garage looked like when I first saw it. The area is totally overgrown and the homeowner was completely overwhelmed as to what to do with it. Because it is not seen directly from the house or deck, it was "out of sight, out of mind". I suggested that we clean it up and make it usable by creating a kitchen garden.
Before
After the area was cleaned, the homeowner sectioned out the growing spaces following a drawing that I had provided. The principles of " square foot" gardening were applied (for easy harvesting). Cedar wood frames were installed to give the garden a raised bed look. We were also mindful to keep some paths wide enough to navigate a wheelbarrow.

The next tasks included mulching the paths to prevent weeds from reappearing, amending the planting areas with compost and planting the vegetables. (The homeowner liked tomatoes, peppers, kale, broccoli, two varieties of squash, strawberries and three varieties of lettuce.) We also laid a brick foundation for the garden bench.

This aerial view shows the garden in it's completed form with the addition of the potting bench and decorative armillary as the focal point.
